Auckland, New Zealand (12/7-8/09) - Hello from the beautiful “City of Sails”.

Not only does Auckland have the highest percentage of sailboats per capita, it has many other ‘onlys’ like being the only major city in the world built on a valley of volcanoes.

Located in the north of New Zealand’s North Island, Auckland is New Zealand’s largest city with 1/3 of New Zealand’s population and the largest Polynesian population in the world. More people (1.3 million) live in Auckland than in all of the New Zealand’s larger South Island.

We started our visit in Auckland by exploring the famed harbor area redeveloped at large expense when New Zealand hosted the America’s Cup sailing races. We followed with an evening harbor cruise where Pat won a full day cruise by knowing the name of New Zealand’s national rugby team (All Blacks) – a major deal here.

So, passing over some of Auckland's attractions like the Auckland Museum, Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Experience (see photo of their cool shark bus), and visiting historic neighborhoods, the next day we were off to Coromandel Town sailing pass most of the islands off Auckland.

Coromandel Town is a former gold rush town and is now a cute laid back beach escape town. A very funky thing to do here is the Driving Creek Railway where a man’s hobby got "out of control" and he built a small railroad to the top of a small mountain (see photo).

At night in Auckland, we saw Jason Alexander’s (George from Seinfeld) very funny stand-up comedy show. On our way to Auckland, we passed through Tirau where they have corrugated metal buildings and signage all throughout the town (see the photo of Tirau's doghouse building).

We were sad to leave beautiful New Zealand, home of friendly people as well as the amazing scenes of the “Lord of the Rings” movies.
