Upscale Hotel on Avenida Alvear - Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina |
Buenos Aires, Argentina (Palermo & Recoleta areas) (2/24-26/2010) – Referred to as the “Paris of South America” (at a fraction of the price), Buenos Aires is largely considered the most European and cosmopolitan city in all of South America.
Palermo Viejo at Night - Buenos Aires, Argentina |
Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina with a population of 12 million (1/3 of Argentina’s total population) and is the second largest city in South America after Sao Paulo, Brazil. Buenos Aires has good restaurants, cafes, bars, etc and is a walker’s city. Grand centuries-old buildings are connected with boulevards that are lined with trees and huge Colonial manors grace the countryside. Parks and plazas are abundant adding a special beauty to Buenos Aires.
The amazing Recoleta Cemetery, where Evita Peron is entombed along with many of Argentina’s past elite and historical figures, dates back to 1822. The 6,400 mausoleums are a demonstration of wealth and some are better than many Argentines’ homes. One wealthy lady was buried with her complete living room.
The Museo Evita Recoleta, housed in a beautiful building, conveys Evita’s life and works, particularly the social aid programs. Pat quickly identified with Evita Peron who helped Argentine women obtain the right to vote in 1951. The Perons (Juan & Evita) evoked a love/hate relationship (revered by the working class and despised by the elite oligarchy).

Galleras Pacifico - Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina |
The shopping in Buenos Aires is often boasted about (especially along Calle Florida with the beautiful Galleras Pacifico, along the very upscale Avenida Alvear, and around Palermo Viejo -- see photos). We are pretty spoiled in all our travels and found it similar to so many other upscale areas in the world – Pat did like the shoes and you can’t beat the leather jackets.

Our Palermo B&B (Posada Palermo) - Buenos Aires, Argentina |
Our wandering took us through Palermo Viejo's pretty tree-lined streets to Plaza Serrano (also called Plazoleta Cortazar, the shopping and restaurant hub of the area – fun at night), Jordin Japones (a attractive Japanese Garden where we has sushi at the teahouse restaurant), Paseo del Rosedol (Rose Garden) where we rented a paddle boat and toured the lake, Parque Tres de Febrero, and Jardin Botanico Carlos Thays (18 acres of gardens and 5,500 varieties of exotic and local flora in the middle of the city) – see photos.
