Bedouin Camp in Wadi Rum, Jordan (5/15-16/2010) - We stayed overnight in a Bedouin tent in the Judean Desert! 

To get to Wadi Rum, we took 4X4’s through the sand to get there (see photos). Wadi Rum is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in south Jordan a few miles from the Saudi Arabia border. About 3% of Jordan’s population of 6 million still live the autonomy of the ancient Bedouin lifestyle.  

They sure demonstrate our “Unhook Now” philosophy but I could not convince Pat to completely cover herself and live in a goat hair tent in the desert. 

Several Bedouin tribes inhabit Wadi Rum and the surrounding area and it was interesting to get to know them better. The area is now one of Jordan's important tourist destinations. 

Popular activities in the desert environment include camping under the stars, riding Arabian horses, hiking, and rock-climbing amongst the massive rock formations.

The rock formations (called jebels) and sunsets here are amazing (see photos). T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), a British liaison officer, based his operations in Wadi Rum to unite the Arabs against the Ottoman Turks in 1916 to weaken them during WWI. 

We stopped by Lawrence’s movie house built here in making the movie Lawrence of Arabia (see photo). One of the more impressive rock formations in the area was named by Lawrence The Seven Pillars of Wisdom (see photo).

On the way to Jerusalem we stayed a night in Jordan’s capital city of Amman before crossing into the West Bank.
