Tel Aviv & Old Jaffa, Israel (Capital) (5/22-24&6/1-2/2010) - The largest city in Israel, Tel Aviv is a vibrant city with lots of young people out on the streets who stay up late at night. Some call Tel Aviv “a city that never sleeps.”
The fine sand beaches running along Tel Aviv are beautiful (a bit like a Miami Beach in the Middle East). The Mediterranean Sea water is clear blue with a great seaside promenade (see photos). We walked along the promenade for miles resting for a frozen coffee combined with a little people watching and then went on a boat ride (Pat loves her boat rides) looking back on the city (see photo).
We stayed near Gordon Beach (see photo). It was so nice we went back day after day to swim the warm water and enjoy the wonderful beach. One night we walked to the very nicely renovated Old Tel Aviv Port, now one of the most fashionable real estate areas in the city, and had a wonderful dinner.
The next night we had dinner in Old Jaffa overlooking Tel Aviv at night (see photo). Beautifully lit at night, the restoration of the historic 4,000-year-old winding streets and port of Old Jaffa is one the best we have ever seen around the world.

The colorful Carmel Market (see photo) with its produce and other stands is a destination in of itself. We liked strolling the nearby Nahalat Benyamin Pedestrian Mall with its European feel, having lunch at the wonderful Orna and Ella café in Tel Aviv’s ‘Greenwich Village’ (Sheinkin Street), taking in a movie in a the very modern Dizengoff Center Shopping Mall, and late dinner along bustling Dizengoff Street (see photos).
We also took in Tel Aviv’s original city center with its ‘functional’ Bauhaus architecture (how does one say boring white buildings?) constructed in the 1930-40’s to accommodate the large immigration. Much of it has been given the name White City (see photo) with unadorned pale white facades and curved balconies. We walked Rothschild Street where Tel Aviv was founded just 100 years ago on the outskirts of the ancient port city of Jaffa as the first Jewish Hebrew city since ancient history.
Some history... The Tel Aviv metropolitan area now has a population of over 3 million of which over 90% are Jewish. During the 1950’s, the city became run down and you can still see some areas yet to be cleaned up. Tel Aviv emerged as a high-tech center in the 1990s and many skyscrapers and modern condo buildings now make up its skyline (see photo). In 1998, the city was described by Newsweek Magazine as one of the top 10 most technologically influential cities in the world.
Israelis are proud of the fact that most of what is now lively cosmopolitan Tel Aviv was desert just 80 years ago.
