Trans-Atlantic Royal Caribbean cruise Miami to Barcelona, Miami’s South Beach, and the Bahamas (3/31-4/16/2011) - Repositioning cruises are a great economical way to get to Europe, Asia, or other destinations. See more below about how repositioning cruises can be a great travel bargain.

On our first day on Royal Caribbean’s 3,000-passenger Liberty of the Seas cruise ship (see photo) we stopped at Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas (see photos). Nassau was a pirate’s port in the early 1700’s under the leadership of famous pirates like Blackbeard. Today Nassau has about 80% of the Bahamas’ 330,000 population and because Nassau is easy walking distance from the many large cruise ships, it is now ‘pirating’ tourist dollars by its 20 expensive jewelry shops.

Listening to Calypso music, we got out of town on a sailboat for a snorkeling trip to the warm waters of Spruce Cay reef. Swimming among the colorful corals, tropical fish, and a Loggerhead sea turtle was invigorating. So was spring break at Senior Frogs (see photos) watching the college girls dancing. Nassau was a very fun stop before boarding the cruise ship for our 7-day crossing the Atlantic to Europe.

The trans-Atlantic repositioning cruise was great - 14 days on a 5-star cruise ship for less then it costs to fly to Europe. You should see the photos of the professional ice skating show at sea! Don’t tell them but we liked it so much we went back for a second night.

Starting in Miami's South Beach, Florida, we stayed in America’s top rated hostel in the middle of trendy South Miami Beach. Hey young men out there… there are 2 young women for every young man staying in these hostels all around the world!

In Miami's South Beach, we had dinner at the fun romantic Espanola Street and spent a day on South Miami’s spectacular beach during spring break – can’t help but notice those college hard bodies at play. See our USA Florida Miami Beach blog post for more about Miami’s South Beach.

Also, you can see more about our ports of call stops on this tran-Atlantic crossing on our blog post for Spain (Canary Islands, Cadiz, Malaga, and Valencia).

For Less Than the Cost of Flying, You Can Travel to or from Europe or Asia on Repositioning Cruises:

Cruise ships need to be repositioned twice a year. For example, when the cruising season is over in the Caribbean, the cruise company will move their ships to Europe taking about 2 weeks (one week visiting port of calls and one week for the Atlantic crossing. Because most people do not have enough time for this type of travel and want to visit more ports of call returning to the same port they left from, repositioning cruises can be a bargain.

We have done three repositioning cruises. Our days pass quickly. They include some interesting ports of call and while at sea, they normally schedule entertainment, interesting lectures, and special activities in addition to all the regular cruise features. We exercise, read, eat, play, enjoy the entertainment, and visit with interesting people. The great thing is the cost of a repositioning 2-week cruise on sale can be about the cost of flight to your destination and there is no jet lag.
