Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria (5/11-12/2011) - Veliko Tarnovo is a picturesque university town in northern Bulgaria surrounded by the Yantra River that beautifully curves around it forming delightful cliffs where swallows dive down to the river bottom.

A town with very rich history, Veliko Turnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and has long traditions in the culture of Bulgaria. The city is rich in museums and historical sites, combined with vivacious night life propelled by the students in one of the largest universities in Bulgaria.

Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the medieval Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1396 and because Bulgaria was one of the first European nations to unify, Veliko Tarnovo was considered by some ancient historians to be the third most important city after Rome and Constantinople at that time.

A main site to visit is the medieval castle (Tsarevets Fortress) that at one time walled 400 houses and 18 churches. It served as the Second Bulgarian Empire's primary fortress and strongest bulwark from 1185 to 1393, housing the royal and the patriarchal palaces, and is a popular tourist attraction. They executed their convicted prisoners by pushing them off a cliff - that should teach them. A beautifully renovated church (Patriarch’s Church of the Ascension) sits at the top of the castle grounds with modern interpretations of Byzantine art.

It was a pleasure to walk through Veliko Tarnovo's well-preserved old town along the cobblestoned Gurko Street with its collection of picture-perfect traditional renaissance houses (see photo). We passed the Asenevs Monument (Four Bulgarian Kings Monument) for kings Assen, Petar, Ivan Shshman, and Kaloyan.

In Veliko Tarnovo, we stayed at Bulgaria’s #1 voted hostel (Hostel Mostel) that was very nice with a large room, double bed, nice ensuite bathroom, great location, free good Wi-Fi Internet, free breakfast and simple dinner with a beer, great helpful English-speaking staff, garden, free pick-up from the bus/train station, and comfortable meeting room - get this… only $42/night for a nice double room! Got to love Bulgarian prices.
