Kyoto, Japan - Japanese FOOD! (10/10-16/2009) - Kyoto is known for its food and it is wonderful and everywhere!
Hundreds of small restaurants and food vendors with many different styles of Japanese food. We didn't know there were so many types of Japanese cuisine (see photos) so we tried them all! - sushi, tempura, sashimi, yakitori, unagi (eel), tonkatsu, rice bowls, noodles, tofu, miso, okonomiyaki (‘pancake’ made in front of you), sukiyaki & shabu-shabu (you cook in broth - wonderful), and of course, rice. Hungry yet? – if not see all the photos attached and you will be.

Interesting enough, the Japanese are big on pictures and have plastic food models outside their restaurants. Sounds funny but it sure helps when many of the menus are in Japanese. Pat was having fun pointing to order until she had liver.
Ponto-cho is one of Kyoto's most atmospheric lanes where on our first day we had kaiseki, an elegant meal that was popular with nobility and refined in Kyoto to a fine Japanese gourmet art. Beautifully prepared, each dish (and you get many) is an artwork and gourmet delight (see photos). The next day we ordered dinner from a push button machine and it was then cooked and delivered to your table - it was good.
A sushi bar in the old part of town provided a wonderful night out for us, as did the okonomiyaki restaurant (Hot Shot) where we had a Japanese ‘pancake’ made of meat, seafood, and vegetables in a cabbage and vegetable batter. Sukiyaki and shabu-shabu is wonderful - beef and vegetables that you cook in a broth and dip in a raw egg or sauce before eating.
The Nishiki Market (Nishiki-Koji) is Kyoto’s best food market - a half mile covered arcade of sheer foodie delight (see photo). With a 100 shops, you can eat on the run or savor samples along the way. It is wonderful glimpse into Kyoto's food culture.
