Milford Sound, New Zealand (11/22/2009) – World famous Milford Sound is a beautiful place, achieving World Heritage status, and makes for an amazing day trip!

We were blessed with absolutely glorious weather (a rare event for Milford Sound in late spring).

From Queenstown, we choose a day trip to Milford Sound with Real Journeys where we took a 5-hour coach ride through one of the best drives in New Zealand, followed by a 2-hour scenic boat trip on Milford Sound, and a 45 minutes awesome flight back.

The sheer magnitude of the landscapes made every minute complete eye candy! The scenery changes from unique New Zealand moss covered forest to rolling green pastures filled with sheep and cows to wild coastline to rocky granite snow-capped mountains to glacier lakes to dramatic and thundering waterfalls and cliff-framed ocean. The coach trip stopped many times to get better views of the amazing landscape and we took walks through the forest.

Our boat trip through Milford Sound brought us by many waterfalls and we have a great view of Mitre Peak (see photo), a 5,560-foot pinnacle.

The 6-person plane flight back from Milford Sound over the snow-capped mountains of New Zealand’s Southern Alps was spectacular! Please see the very rare photo we got of Lake Quill and Sutherland Falls from the air. This photo is becoming one of our most well-known around the world.

We enjoyed the journey to and from Milford Sound as much as viewing Milford Sound itself.

Some information about Milford Sound... Milford Sound is actually a 9.3-mile-long fiord in the Southern Alps of New Zealand hemmed by sheer granite cliffs rising up to 4,000 feet. Geologists tell us that huge glaciers formed the amazing landscape but Pat and I like the Maori (original New Zealand people) story better - the demi-god Tu-te-raki-whanoa craved out the fiords.
